Nowadays, many different types of window tinting coating materials that resembles stained glass can be bought from hardware stores or through online. Two types of windows coating films are available from these stores, they are those with adhesive and those without. Many owners would prefer going for the adhesive-free ones as they are easy to remove and to install. If you are thinking of installing window coating films on your window, we would recommend that you use the adhesive-free based ones.

Today’s manufacturing technology had enabled various types of designs and patterns for the window films. There are also many benefits to have your window coated with vinyl films. In the past, many owners tint their windows with dark films. Today, owners have many more possible options to coat their window.

Many owners are looking for efficient and practical solutions to provide some privacy to some rooms. There are many ways you can do this. You can make the glass window opaque by using specific type of window coating films that is suited for its function. The best thing about having opaque window film is that it blocks of unwanted view and but make the window translucent.

Frosted window films are fully opaque window film that totally block off view but still allow light to come in. If you prefer semi-opaque, then go for the lite frost version.

Frosted window coating film is actually part of the etched glass film category. Etching a glass would require that the glass be sand-blasted and this can only be done in a factory. Having an etched glass would mean totally replacing the window glass. There are other methods available such as using etching cream which you can do it by yourself, but the methods is extremely messy and is irreversible.

Etched glass window coating films make the entire process easy as all you need to do is to apply a layer of vinyl film over the window that you wished to etched. These vinyl films can be applied to any glass windows and glass doors too. There are also many different types of designs that is suitable for both doors and glass.

Stained glass mostly refer to colored glass. It has more than one thousand years of history and mostly applied to windows of churches, cathedrals, chapels and other religious buildings. Even today, whenever the term stained glass is mentioned, the image of religious figure in churches is conjured. The application of stained glass is not limited to windows only, it is also popular on lamp shades and other elements.

Stained glass is colored by adding metallic salts during manufacturing process. The colored glasses is then crafted into a big window pane by arranging small pieces of color glasses into patterns or pictures and traditionally, it is held by strips of leads and then supported by a frame. Some painted details enhanced the design. Stained glass also refers to windows where colors are painted onto the glass.

In the past, stained glass is both an art and a craft and therefore it requires very high artistic skill to design and assemble the pieces. It is also an engineering fleet as the glass window assembled from so many small glass pieces must fit just right into the intended space and it must be able to withstand all kinds of weather condition. It is amazing to note that many large pieces of stained glass windows that have been crafted during the Middle Ages are still standing today.

Stained glass is often referred to as “illuminated wall decorations” as it serves to control light that comes in. In Western Europe, stained glasses is one of the major form of pictorial art that have survived. The designs of stained glasses are not necessarily figurative, they can be non-figurative as well. Most stained glasses in the past are drawn from bible, history or literature and mostly consists of saints, patrons or armorial. The designs of the windows in a church usually consists of a theme, for example it may consists of the history of Christ or in the case of a college hall, figures that represents arts and sciences.

Stained glasses began to flourish as an art during the 10th and 11th century. Glass factories were set up at locations where silica is readily available. Silica is an important constituent of glass and glasses are usually colored by adding metallic oxides while the glass was still in its molten state. Different types of metal will produce different colors, for example, copper oxides will produce green, cobalt produces blue and real gold were added to produce red glasses. Today, gold is substituted with other cheaper ingredients.

There are many techniques to manufacture different types of glass. To get a cylinder glass, the glass was collected from the pot into a molten ball and blown. It is continuously being manipulated until it forms a large cylindrical shape of even diameter. The thickness of the wall must be even too. Then, it was cut open, laid flat and annealed to make it stable. This type of glass is most commonly used in ancient stained glass windows.

In the crown glass technique, glass is partly blown into a hollow vessel. It is then put on a revolving table and rapidly spun. The molten material will flatten and spread outwards. It is then cut into small sheets. The crown glass techniques is usually used in small paned windows of 16th and 17th century houses. The centers of the glasses are thicker than the edge and is known as bull’s eyes.

Other than the techniques mentioned above, there is also the tabled glass and the flashed glass techniques to produce stained glasses for different functions and usage. There are still many notable glass factories in Germany, USA, England, France, Poland and Russia that still produce very high quality stained glasses using traditional methods. These factories usually produce glasses for the purpose of restoring older glasses built before 1920s. Modern stained glass windows uses different types of glass and use mostly commercially made glasses.

The process of creating a stained glass window is complicated. The first stage involve getting very accurate dimensions of the window where stained glasses are supposed to be fitted in. The theme of stained glass design is important and it should suit the locations and maybe the theme of a particular patron. Small design may be prepared.

In the past, whenever window glasses are inserted into window spaces, iron rods were put at various points to support the weight of the window. The window is tied to the rods using copper wires. Very large windows are divided into sections by heavy metal frames. This method is popular for large painted windows of the Baroque period.

Then from the year 1300 onwards, artists start to use silver stain that is made of silver nitrate. This is usually painted onto the outside of a piece of glass and then fired to make it permanent. The yellow effect of silver stain is useful in enhancing borders, canopies and haloes, and also for changing the color of blue glass into green glass.

Then by 1450, flesh tones are enhance using a stain known as Cousin’s rose. By 1500s, a range of glass stains were introduced, with most of them colored by ground glass particles. Then, by 1600s, a style of stained glass had evolved that no longer depends on skilful cutting of colored glasses. Pictures are painted onto glass panels of square format and the pieces were assembled into metal frames.

By the 19th and 20th century, many innovations of techniques have been used and many new types of glass were developed for stained glass windows. Tiffany glasses and slab glasses are such examples.
